The reason why I chose this journal was, because after reading all of the journals I chose around 8. When I realized that time was almost due and that I had to turn in this paper for tomorrow I said to myself: this is the one that I can deal with today. The one about happiness seemed to be quite difficult. I would need to read about it for a while and I didn’t have that much time. The one about neutral men sounded good but I wasn’t inspired. Another reason why I chose it was because I really liked the topic, and the quote because I am often angry so I liked the topic. Now after having finished this paperwork I am satisfied with it never thought I had such a good time thinking about David Copperfield.
This is made in a way of blog. It is recommended for all people from high school and further on.
Anger, grudges and resentments.
“The important thing of forgetting and forgiving is being happy.” Alvaro Suarez
“A man in passion rides a horse that runs away with him” Thomas fuller.English cleric.
“Never forget what a man has said to you when he was angry.” Henry Ward Beecher.
What a disaster! These two quotes are exactly the opposite. Who should we believe?
What does Beecher think?, one of the most stupid things to do is to remember exactly what somebody said when he was angry. When somebody says something in the middle of a heated situation most of the time what they say is crap, stupidities. So, why remember it? Is it good to remember what angry people say? Because the only reason that I can think about for remembering what somebody said when angry would be for being able to remind him of what he has done or said. That means to hold resentments against him. S
o, what’s the point?
It is better what Thomas Fuller states. Anger is a passion, so when a man is angry you shouldn’t listen to what he has to say because he is not thinking. He is like a runaway horse. He doesn’t make sense. It is like as his words be stones thrown to you . They hurt you and the responsible one of those blows forgets what happened and if you try to make him remember he will say it wasn't that serious.
So again what’s the point for remembering what people say when angry? After this explanation I hope it is clear the resentment and grudge stuff. I don't like holding grudges towards people because when I do I feel miserable. I think that is better not to remember what somebody said when angry because it is easier to let go. So the question is “Does forgiveness imply a degree of forgetfulness on the part of the person who is wronged?”
Yes ,I think that forgiveness implies a degree of forgetfulness not only for the sake of positive thinking but for well being issues. In other words when you forgive means that what happened is not important anymore as they say “no hard feelings”. How come you are not going to have hard feelings if you still remember what happened? Well, I know it is difficult to forget but then what is important is that when you remember that remembrance won’t affect your self esteem or won’t make you feel a grudge, and you get upset again. So probably a degree of forgetfulness has to do with healing that psychological wound.
Now I would like to connect this quote with a novel. In this novel there is a man that doesn’t forget ill situations. Which ones? they are not mentioned. But he seems to be on top of a horse that runs towards despair and wants to take everybody with him. And there are other three that try not to remember the bad things but the good memories and this back up our idea of forgetfulness in forgiveness. This novel is David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. Uriah Heep is the antagonistin the story. I think that Uriah Heep is a man that holds many grudges especially towards David Copperfield. It is not mentioned why he is so mean and evil but it is clear to me that the reason why he can't stand David is because Mr. Wickfield's daughter falls in love with David. And Mr.Heep wants Agnes Wickfield for him. Imagine then with all I have said about Mr. Heep. When he realized he was not going to be able to fulfill his most deep wishes of marrying Agnes and becoming not only her husband but being literally on top of both Wickfields in order to step on them and crush them .This frustration caused by Copperfield is the reason of his hatred towards him.
Another thing that seems to bother Heep is that David was a boy that came from a very miserable background and made himself an honest living by getting an education. Mr. Heep also studied accounting but thinking in the story it seems as if he thought people won't ever accept him and he was the one that didn’t accept his past. He was always remembering he was from a humble upbringing. It seems he wanted to scrub this idea on his mind as a curse or probably he wanted others pity. He was strange, he said he was “umble” (not humble), as he said but that comment instead of making us(the readers and the people in the story) feel at least sorry for him it seemed to be like a pose, not real, not felt, not sincere. He was a hypocrite. Or worse he was bitter all the way because he holded grudges against everybody.
On the other hand we know all about David’s life and we cannot say it was an easy one. David could have been resented with the life he had had and he is not.He decides to choose remembering the good parts of life. Without saying anymore we may decide what we prefer to be the David’s or tha Heep’s in our story. How are you happier?
